An aqueous parts washer is a piece of production equipment, and like any production equipment, it performs best when properly maintained. The good news is that aqueous washers — especially stainless steel models — require relatively little maintenance compared to solvent systems. A few simple tasks performed on a regular schedule will keep your machine cleaning effectively, extend the life of your cleaning solution, and prevent avoidable downtime. This guide covers the essential maintenance tasks organized by frequency, from the two-minute daily check to the monthly deep inspection.
Daily Tasks (5 Minutes)
Check the solution level — aqueous solution evaporates during operation, especially in heated systems running at 140°F or higher. If the level drops too low, the pump can run dry and fail. Top off with water as needed. Skim floating tramp oil using your machine's integrated oil skimmer or a manual absorbent pad — removing oil before it emulsifies preserves detergent capacity and extends bath life. Remove large debris from the filter basket or chip screen to prevent pump blockage. These three checks take less than five minutes and prevent the two most common causes of premature pump failure.

Weekly Tasks (15–20 Minutes)
Clean or replace the filter — a clogged filter reduces pump flow, lowers spray pressure, and allows particulate to recirculate onto parts you are trying to clean. Inspect spray nozzles to ensure they are clear and delivering a consistent pattern. A blocked nozzle creates a shadow zone where parts receive no spray coverage. Check that the solution temperature is reaching and holding setpoint — a heater that is losing capacity will show up here before it fails completely.
Monthly Tasks (30–60 Minutes)
Test solution concentration using a refractometer or your detergent supplier's titration kit and add detergent as needed to return to the correct working range. Inspect the pump and all plumbing fittings for weeping or drips — small leaks worsen rapidly under thermal cycling. Clean the tank interior if sludge is accumulating at the bottom. Stainless steel tanks are far easier to clean than painted steel since contamination does not bond to the smooth stainless surface. Check turntable or conveyor drive components for wear.
When to Change the Solution
There is no fixed schedule for solution changes — the right interval depends on your contamination load, part volume, and how consistently you perform the daily and weekly tasks above. Signs it is time for a fresh batch: parts coming out with visible residue despite correct temperature and concentration, persistent foul odor indicating bacterial growth, excessive foam that does not break down between cycles, or visibly dark solution that does not clear after filtering.
